HID, High Intensity Discharge is a gas discharge at high temperatures and pressure that leads to high light output. As Xenon is used as main filling gas, this light has also been named xenon light in automotive applications. The discharge process is initiated by a very high voltage pulse and transferred into a continous arcing. The starting process and the control of the arc are handled by a ballast.

Full digital ballast developed by Nucon: A micro controler is calculating out of a number of parameters like the lamp voltage, input voltage, PCB temperature, etc. the duty cycles and frequency for the power MOSFETs. The digital device can be connected for remote and diagnosis purposes via a serial bus interface to a personal computer. The ballast is based on planar transformers, they use the PCB itself for the windings granting the same quality by low cost. This ballast has a superior DIMMING RANGE 18-70W !!!

Don't be blinded! The DL50 offers only nearly double the light output compared to a D2S 35W, with a very long lifetime and can be powered also at 70W !

Chinese D1S on the right side. This bulb we ordered at a German Dealer and gives us reason to beleave that faked Osram and Philips bulbs are now distributed on the market! Only when looking at very specific details you find lower quality hints of the plastic mold. There is a crap burner on the Chinese brand mounted, but we are sure that the mold will be used to fake Philips D1S. It is a sad but true story in China they fake evrything: ICs, MOSFETs, capacitors,...

Philps D1S spec

The discharge bulb has two electrode wires inside a small elliptical shaped burner volume. An ignition coil generates a flashover between the electrodes to start discharge. The first automotive discharge bulb was the D1. The improved D2S has its burner inside a glas tube for protection. It also has a high voltage connector socket. The U1 bulb was specially edited for an US company with an insulated outer elektrode to reduce the danger of electric shock. The further improved D1S now uses a socket integrated ignition coil for the high voltage pulse generation. Each discharge bulb requires still a ballst, even with the ignition coil being integrated in the socket. Our nucon ballast is directly connected to the D1S bulb. In order to run a D2S bulb an ignitor modul can be put between the ballast and the D2S using a high voltage connector. Preferably a click On starter in D1S style is to be used.

D2S H4 bulb version with direct connected compact igniter unit. The connection cable between igniter and ballast can be made depending to the customer needs quite long that an easy mounting of the ballast inside the vehicle can be achieved where sufficient space is available. Note: in most countries simple upgrading from halogen to HID is not allowed!

32 W type

21W and 32W HID bulbs ideal for installation in existing small reflectors. The 21W bulb is minimum dimmable down to approx 15W. This bulb has very intresting properties in combination with Nucon ballast like fast flicker free light run up and hot restart capabillity. No outer conductive free touchable electrode important for safety reasons. An ideal bulb for 2 wheel applications like motor cycles or bikes and other portable systems. A smaller Nucon ballast including all safety features will soon be available!!

Xenon retrofit without glare: Ballasts are preset to 25W. Bulbs are Philips D2S 4100K in combination with Click-ON from Sumida. The light distribution is very brought and stray light not there. The question is why not retrofit with 25W HID with already certified quality parts? The Philips D2S 35W is law conform and grants the tolerances and xenon projection lenses are available. The brightness is limited by the ballast to halogen strength. There is no colour blue shift nor flickr and you save even fuel energy with the existing cars!!!

The luminance distribution shows the higher temperature of the arc.

HID lifetime depends strongly on switching cycles. Overpowering should be avoided by the ballast. (pictures taken from Philps catalog 96)

  • no temperature control and cooling of the bulb is required like it is with LED
